The Ring’s video doorbells come with a variety of features, whether they’re battery options or wired options. It depends to some degree on the doorbell you choose for whether you can access something like a bird’s visual field, but all modern doorbells offer features like motion detection and person and package detection.
What we’re talking about here is the latter feature. Package detection is a feature that allows the ring video doorbell to recognize the package (just in case the name is not passed).
Below are step-by-step steps on how to set up package detection with the Ring Video doorbell, what the features do, and how to customize it.
What you need
- Your Ring Video Doorbell
- Ring app
- Your smartphone or tablet
Short version
- It will start Ring app.

- Tap “Motion Settings” tile.
- Scroll and tap “Smart Alert”.
- Select “Adjust Smart Alerts”.

To make the most of this feature, there are a few things you need to know about package detection for ring video doorbells. This feature is designed to notify you when a package appears in the view of the ring video doorbell. Once you set up your setup, you can also view package events specifically in the Ring App’s timeline in the Ring Video Doorbell Timeline, but you will need a Ring Protection subscription to access the functionality.
Packages are most reliably detected when all sides are standard boxes of 10 inches or more. Therefore, if an envelope, tube, groceries, or meal lands immediately, you may not be notified. Motion detection must be turned on because the ring video doorbell detects motion and checks any box for the package zone set by the camera. The package must also be located in the package zone and in the full field of view of the camera for detection.
That memo is worth repeating that this feature will most certainly work if the packages remaining outside the package zone are not detected as packages and the package zone is within 2 meters of the ring video doorbell. With that in mind, here are detailed steps on how to set up and customize package detection for your ring video doorbell.
-
Step 1.
Open the Ring App and head to the Ring Video Doorbell Settings
First, open the Rings app and tap the Ring Video Doorbell from the feed (if multiple ring devices are configured). There is a Settings Cog in the top right corner, tap on it to set up the ring video doorbell. You will then need to tap the “Motion Settings” tile towards the bottom of the screen.
-
Step 2.
Open Smart Alert
Within the motion settings tile there are many options. You’ll want to scroll down and find “Smart Alerts”. Tap Smart Alerts and select Adjust Smart Alerts when a pop-up appears. It may not be, or if it is, the Packages section will appear.
-
Step 3.
Turn on package alerts
If you are setting up package alerts for the first time, the video and alert icons under the package section of smart alerts will be grayed out. Tap one of these icons to turn on the package detection feature. You will see some pop-ups that will prompt you to “turn on the feature” first.
After this, you should select “Continue” in the 3 follow-ups to make sure you understand which packages are detected, how they are detected, and how to check past package delivery in the timeline.
-
Step 4.
Create a package zone
If you are setting up a package alert for the first time, you will be prompted to set up the package zone after the above pop-up. To do this, drag the point to make the zone smaller and larger, or press and hold the center of the orange zone to move the entire zone. Remember, it must be within 2 meters of your ring video doorbell.
-
Step 5.
Customize package zones and alerts
When you set up a package zone and alert for the first time, you will see the “Customize” option under the package section so you can select it. Tap Customize to change the package zone or add another zone.
However, you can also tap “Package Sensitivity.” This allows you to adjust the motion sensitivity and package sensitivity slider to improve notifications. If you want more alerts, move the slider to the right. If you are getting unwanted alerts for a package, move to the left. To save your changes, don’t forget to press “Save” in the top right corner.
that’s it! You must get an alert every time a package is delivered and remains in the package zone.
