The versatile and smooth-operated switchbot roller shade offers a wide range of control options, including material through a compatible hub. The design that suits its cut is interesting, but the lack of color options and nasty installation removes a lot. Unless you want white or gray blinds, when you buy blinds made from smart blind manufacturers you will get the one that suits your decorations.

Switchbot Roller Shade: Introduction
Most smart blinds are made at measurement times and purchased at latency while the blinds are made to meet your exact requirements. Switchbot Roller shades are different. This is because these blinds are designed to be cut to the size of your home using a clever razor. It certainly makes them easy to get and makes them easy with a little wait, but they are very troublesome to install and there are not many color choices. These two factors are disappointing. Otherwise, it’s because ease of use and material compatibility make these blinds great.
install
- You need to cut it to size
- It’s quite a bit of setup
The Switchbot Roller shade is designed to cut to fit your home size, but you will need to choose from four options (S, M, L, XL) to get the correct size to fit your window. Each size has a minimum and maximum width, with a range of 22.8 inches to 72.8 inches wide. It covers most windows, but like most smart tints, it comes out with very narrow windows.
Unfortunately, blinds are available in gray or white only, with no other colors. Buy Somfy Smart Blinds or Smartwings Blinds to get a wider range of colors and fabrics. Given that blinds are also part of the room’s decor, the lack of choice in Switchbot options could potentially put off many people.
The sizes vary, but the installation process is the same for all blinds. First, I had to remove the blindness from the motor. This allows you to resize the main mount. This is held together by a series of screws and can be loosened using the provided screwdriver.

Once done I had to secure the mount in the selected window, resize it until it fits in, and tighten the screws.

If the mount is of the right size, the balance weight at the bottom of the blind will also need to be resized, making it the same width as the mount.
Not only does it serve as a weight on the bottom, but this balance is also a guide to attaching spring mounted brackets. First I had to attach the cardboard template to the weight.

I then added a stick-on spirit level and used the weight to mark the window drill holes. This part of the installation process was very simple and there was a bracket attached to the wall right away.

At this stage, the actual blinds are too long and you will need to go back to the motor and clip them, then you will need to screw the special razor attachment into the edge. This has screws that bend to lower the blade.

When the Switchbot Roller shade is added to the Switchbot app, there is a special cutting mode, turning the blinds to cut. Once done, the app suggests that you shouldn’t snap the inner metal tube, but that didn’t work for me. Instead, I had to use a hacksaw to get a neat finish to cut this.
It’s a very troublesome process and I’m not worth it compared to choosing the blind style you want from another manufacturer and making it in the size you want.
Still, cutting to size will allow you to properly attach the blinds and clip them to the mount, but there is another task to do.

Rather than cutting or fitting into a fabric loop, you should fold and staple the bottom of the shade. It’s a bit tedious and doesn’t look as clean as you would get with a ready-made blind.
There is an optional solar panel that plugs into the blind’s USB-C port. My windows are heading north, and there is enough ambient light to help refill the battery, but sometimes I need to recharge directly. If you have a window that gets more light, you don’t need to manually charge it.

Features and performance
- Compatible substances (with hub)
- Wired remote
- option
When you connect to the app, there is a simple setup routine that requires you to configure a fully rolled and fully open position. It’s similar to the Switchbot Cortan 3 setup routine, and it only takes a few minutes to fully adjust the blinds.

Once adjusted, you can control the Switchbot Roller Shade via the app, open or close it, or place it anywhere in between.

App control is mostly easier to manually control the Switchbot roller shade using the provided plug-in wired remote. This has two buttons. One can be opened and the other can be closed. If the blind presses a button while it is operating, it pauses where it is and allows for part open position.

If you don’t like the wire, the Switchbot Roller shade is compatible with Bluetooth Switchbot remotes and can be placed anywhere. The pair pairs directly with blind people, so the surgery is at a close moment.
For more advanced controls, you will need a Switchbot Hub that opens a cloud service for remote control and enables Amazon Alexa or Google Home skills. However, if you have a problem-compatible Switchbot hub, you can connect the blinds directly to your selected problem-compatible smart home system, including Apple Home.
The problem is the choice connection, as it is faster, more responsive and gives you more automation control than using a cloud system. I combined the Switchbot Roller shade with Apple Home, but the controls are very fast and responsive.
The app has automation controls using other Switchbot devices, such as opening blinds when Switchbot lock is unlocked.
More useful, with solar panels installed, blinds can be automated based on ambient light levels, closing them when they are very bright, and there is no direct sunlight. Skillfully, this automation can be timed to work only at a specific time, so there is no risk of blinds automatically opening in the middle of the night. I found the blinds were smooth to work, reliable, and quietly opened and closed the set position many times when using the remote. Using the app is a bit more hit and miss, and the app became premature when I was trying to control the blinds.

Final Thoughts
A clever idea, the Switchbot roller shade works smoothly and comes with a wide range of control options, including material compatibility. That nasty installation and dull color choice put the sides down and make maid blinds a better option for most people.
